YellowScan’s LiDAR Vx-20 Provides Micro-Relief of a Neolithic village in Corsica

It has been an exciting beginning of the year for L’Avion Jaune, sister company of YellowScan.

2 team members went to Corsica to survey a micro-relief of the archeological site of Mount Revincu, a Neolithic village in Corsica.

Overlooking the golf course of Saint-Florent, and the desert of Agriates, the Mount Revincu site shelters one of the best-preserved Neolithic villages in the Western Mediterranean. During the excavations of the area, more than 50 domestic and funerary stone structures were discovered including 2 dolmens and housing foundations.

To properly document the area, the Regional Office of Cultural Affairs of Corsica requested a LiDAR acquisition. The goal was to precisely map those structures and to understand their integration into the landscape, to deepen archeological analysis and allow for site planning.

For this specific mission the LiDAR YellowScan Vx-20, mounted on the Matrice 600, flew over 60km and covered more than 150 hectares in 17 flights. The team has raised more than 200 control points with RTK GPS on the structure unveiled during the excavation.

The Vx-20 was chosen in the face of challenges related to the project: First was the steep relief; then density of the vegetation; and finally, remoteness of the site making launch point access difficult.

Data collection succeeded beyond expectation, with L’Avion Jauneable to collect 300 million raw sensor data points.

Thanks to Positics who provided the Vx-20, the Regional Office of Cultural Affairs of Corsica and L’Avion Jaune to share their story.
